Well the 2018 Harvest season official began at Clos du Lac on Monday August 27th at 3:30 am. We kicked off the harvest season with a night harvest and were finished by 8:00 am. The bins were loaded onto the truck and headed off to Napa by 9:00.
Night harvests are beneficial for several reasons. Vintners prefer them because the grapes are harvested when the air is cooler, and keeping the temperature of the fruit down helps to control the temperature once they are crushed and fermentation begins. Night harvest also helps with crew availability. Some times the crew needs to work several harvests in a single day. In other cases, some of the crew have second jobs in construction, so a night harvest lets them work in the vineyards and then still make it to work on time for their other job.
