En Goblet, french for the Goblet, refers to the the goblet shape formed when head trained vine grow upwards. Mourvedre has a strong inclination to grow in the upward fashion, and as a consequence even our vertical cordon trained vines emulate head trained vines and our Mourvedre blocks have this lovely, neat goblet shape to them, like a well organized wine cabinet. Like good little soldiers the vines are all lined up and well behaved.
Cab Franc,…well, not so much. Cab Franc shoots frequently, but not alway, start by growing upwards, but sometimes they grow sideways or even downward. Even the upward shoots drift horizontally after they grow a few inches, and pretty soon the entire row looks like it just woke up and is having a bad hair day. Not only do these vines look disheveled, but it makes them harder to manage and groom. Fairly quickly the tendrils from each shoot grab on to each other and get tangled. After just a few weeks of growth, they can make the rows impassable without pruning.
Can you tell which is which?
